Objective of the Document

The objective of the document is to facilitate institutions and faculty to develop and implement skills training as part of implementation of new Undergraduate Curriculum.

Glossary of Terms Used in the Document

Skill: Skill is the ability to perform a task leading to a specific predefined outcome. Skill may be:

    1. Intellectual or cognitive which includes clinical reasoning and decision making skills,
    2. Procedural or psychomotor skills that require manual dexterity and include laboratory and clinical skills,
    3. Communication skills,
    1. Team skills including leadership skills.

 

Competency: The habitual and judicious use of communication, knowledge, technical skills, clinical reasoning, attitude, values, and reflection in daily practice for the benefit of the individual and the community being served.
Skill Assessment: A session that assesses the skill of the student including those  in the laboratory, bed-side, skills lab, skills station that uses mannequins/ paper cases/simulated patients/real patients as the context demands.
DOAP (Demonstration -Observation - Assistance - Performance): A practical session that allows the student to observe a demonstration, assist the performer, perform in a simulated environment, perform under supervision or perform independently.
Infrastructure:  
Skill lab spreads over 160 sq.m., Located in physiology department with manikins, simulated models for various certifiable procedural skills as per GMER 2019.
Lab comprises of skill learning area, skill assessment area and discussion and demonstration area.

  1. Demonstration area- provided with audiovisual aids for brief introduction, presentation, and interactive discussion over demonstration,
  2. Skill learning area- equipped with models and manikins for basic skills like hand washing techniques, CPCR, First aids like dressing & suturing, application of different splints, audiovisual aids, examination table, simulation models, human pelvis model for teaching process of normal delivery, Cu T insertion, Adult and infant manikins for teaching the process of intubation and other similar equipments and instruments. Students are encouraged to perform different skills through videos, simulations, and demonstrations on subjects.
  3. Skill Assessment area- to conduct OSPE and OSCE
