Community Medicine
The department of Community Medicine was started in the year 1990. The department handled courses for MBBS and CHO (Community Health Officer). The functioning of Urban Health Training Centre (UHTC) & Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC) are under the control of this department.
In our department Students are trained in a way that they are:
- Aware of the physical, social, psychological, economic and environment aspect of health and disease.
- Able to apply the clinical skills to recognize and manage common health problems including their physical, emotional and social aspects at the individual and family levels and deal with medical emergencies at the community level.
- Able to define and manage the health problems of the community.
- Able to organize elementary epidemiological studies to assess the health problems in the area. For this he should be able to design a study, collect data, analyze it with statistical tests, make a report and be able to participate in a health information system.
- Priorities the most important problems and help formulate a plan of action to manage them under National Health Programme guidelines including population control and family welfare programme. He should be able to assess and allocate resources, implement and evaluate the programmes.
- Demonstrate knowledge of principles of organizing prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable diseases.
- Organize health care services for special groups like mothers, infants, under-five children and school children.
- Organize health care in case of calamities.
- Able to work as an effective member of the health team.
- Able to coordinate with and supervise other members of the health team and maintain liaison with other agencies.
- Able to plan and implement health education programmes. Able to perform administrative functions of health centre’s.
- Able to promote community participation especially in areas of disease control, health education and implementation of national programmes.
- Aware of the national priorities and the goals to be achieved to implement primary health care.
The Department of Community Medicine of ACPM Medical College, Dhule has developed the Rural health training centre at KhedaPHC,District Dhule affiliated with government to offer comprehensive health care services to poor and needy people living in rural areas. Department of Community Medicine has an Urban health centre known as PatilBandhucentre in Dhule city serving urban slum and poor population.
These centres provide facility for community based learningby undergraduate (UG) and intern students. Students learn betterabout patients and their disease incommunity settings rather thanwhile seeing them in OPD or wards. This community-based, service learning experience during third semester of MBBS help students to develop effective Doctor patient relationship and practice effective communication strategies.These students are guided by faculty of department.
- All UGs are taken to RHTC and UHTC during their community postings with the aim to understand the fieldepidemiology includingphysical and socialenvironment of theurban and rural areas and functioning of RHTC and UHTC . Students learn how to Interact with manpower postedand learn about the implementation of various nationalprograms.
During their field postings Students visit Anganwadicentres, Sub-healthcentres, Primary health centres, and Community health centres.The community exposure was given to the students by allocating them families, Conduct field survey, Dietary survey, Demography survey, case study and mini projects. For these survey Questionnaire is prepared regarding Filling of village details - Briefing for family visits-record exercise - Family allotment, - Briefing regarding formats on Environment, Non-communicable disease, Briefing regarding diet survey (Weighmentmethod) and Personal hygiene. They also gained an idea of the common diseases prevailing in rural and semi-urban areas. After their field visit is over presentation of the family field visit is conducted in the department of Community Medicine under guidance of Faculty.
The questionnaire results show that Field visit tours provided opportunities for students to visit healthcare centresand learn to collect, tabulate, analyze and interpret various health indicators (maternal mortality rate, infant mortality rate, crude birth rate, crude death rate, fully vaccinated children, stillbirth rate, antenatal care, etc.) and as a result develop an understanding of common rural health problems They also visit water Filtration plant , Old age home, Orphanage home, ICDS centres, RNTCP centres, Immunization clinics, Leprosy centres. The visit to the local meteorology centre raised their awareness of environmental health (air, water, noise, soil, meteorology, climate change, etc.), which constitutes a major portion of their community medicine curriculum..
2. Teaching and training (Interns): All interns during posting in Community Medicine are posted by rotation at both RHTCand UHTC. Internship is an ideal period to pick up and refine the clinical/ communication skills under the “real field situation”.
Other activities:
- Observance of varioushealth-related days and weeks:Regular observance of World Health Day, World AIDS Day, malaria fortnight, nutrition week at RHTC and UHTC helps in generating awareness in community and Paramedical staff posted under department in coordination with regular staff of PHC/UHC areused for community mobilization.
- Multi-specialty Clinics RHTC and UHTC (once a week/ month) withproper referral tomedical college is also conducted by department which is helpful in providingquality care andbuilding up the rapportwith community.

The department is well equipped with all facilities required for undergraduate students as per MCI norms.
Departmental office – For maintain all records.
Separate room for each teaching faculty is provided.
For theory teaching we have lecture hall with capacity of 100 students. The lecture hall is well equipped with all audiovisual aids.
Department also have library where students can sit and read many books related to Community Medicine. There are more than 100 books in departmental library.Library has an adequate collection of journals, which are being utilized by the undergraduates and faculty.
Demonstration rooms: we have one spacious demonstration rooms where teaching programmes and practical classes for undergraduates are conducted ,it is equipped with audiovisual facility for small group teaching in the department.
Department performs various activities for undergraduate students like field visit, Health center visit, seminars. Departmental active teaching learning includes Problem based learning, Self directed learning, Poster presentation competitions and Role play.
Undergraduate students are also motivated and provided all the required help for ICMR research projects. Faculty members help students in extracurricular activities like various cultural programmes, Annual Magazine preparations. Special attention is given to slow performers through remedial classes and assignments.
